Additional information:

The CBLP Certification programs were developed and are managed by a regional consortium including: the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council, University of Maryland Sea Grant-Extension, Wetlands Watch, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Habitat Partners.

Learning objectives were developed by a technical advisory committee, and the program is guided by a 12-person steering committee of technical experts from related fields of study and practice.

The CBLP-A certificate program was originally designed as a complementary program for youth internships and summer jobs programs and is being adapted for high schools beginning in 2020.

CBLP-A is a competency-based instruction program with competency assessment provided through performance-based testing based on the learning objectives of a Chesapeake Bay regionwide professional certification program, the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Certification Program.

The CBLP-A certificate is also a pathway to and meets the prequalifications for the Level 1 CBLP certification, while also preparing students for entry-level jobs in sustainable landscape management and/or stormwater best management practices (BMPs) maintenance and providing professional mentors and/or career days for the enrolled students.

At least one CBLP-A instructor with the school implementing the program must be a Level 1-certified CBLP. The Level 1 CBLP certification training is recognized and approved for continuing education by several other professional certifications including: Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania certified horticulturalists, Virginia DCR-certified urban nutrient management planners and DEQ-certified stormwater and erosion and sediment control inspectors and planners, Association of Professional Landscape Designers, International Society of Aboriculture ISA certification, and American Society of Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System.

CBLP-A candidates must complete the following performance testing to obtain the associate certificate:

  • Pay $50 application fee (or the fee may be paid by partner organization)
  • Attend one-day (eight-hour) training
    • complete in-class training quiz (25 points)
    • complete two training day field exercises (50 points)
  • Attend at least two "lunch and learn" sessions during the summer and complete a post-class quiz for each. (25 points each)
  • Successfully complete a field-based skills assessment by the end of the summer (100 points)

(Total points possible: 200. Passing score to obtain CBLP-A is 150 points)
