Additional information:

American Medical Technologists (AMT) is a national credentialing organization for medical assistants, clinical laboratory practitioners, and other allied health professionals. AMT has over 100,000 active members in good standing, more than half of whom hold the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification.

AMT's Registered Medical Assistant certification program has been in existence for more than 40 years. The program has been fully accredited for many years by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), a division of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence.

The RMA exam is developed and administered in accordance with the highest standards of psychometrics and exam security. The exam periodically is content-validated using task analyses to ensure that it tests for currently relevant medical assisting competencies. It is scored on a criterion-referenced basis (i.e., it is not scored on a "curve" but rather on the basis of the minimum score necessary to demonstrate competence). You can see the examination content outline for the RMA exam on our website at http://www.americanmedtech.org/files/RMA%20Content%20Outline%20Detail.pdf.

AMT has a mandatory Certification Continuation Program (CCP). This program requires AMT members to document activities supporting continuation of AMT certification every three years. Each AMT certificant, including Registered Medical Assistants, is required to attest to CCP compliance every three years, which can be accomplished by a combination of continuing education, continuous employment, and several other means of meeting the CCP criteria. The CCP program is intended to promote, encourage, and reward practitioners who demonstrate continued efforts to carry the competencies needed at initial certification throughout their careers.
