Definition should include the type of building construction and the associated hazard:
- Type I (fire-resistive)—loading, or the weight of building materials or objects in a building
- Type II (noncombustible)—rapid roof failure due to lightweight steel construction and loading
- Type III (ordinary)—age of the building
- Type IV (heavy timber)—fire cuts
- Type V (wood frame/lightweight)—balloon or platform construction, including fire stopping
Process/Skill Questions:
- What types of building construction are found in the local area?
- What are the potential hazards with the five types of construction, and how do they affect firefighting efforts?
- What are the hazards associated with lightweight truss roofs?
