• following manufacturer specifications
• applying the lightener to 1/2 inch from the scalp, up to but not including the last inch
• applying near the scalp ends with fresh lightener
• testing for lightening action
• rinsing the lightener from hair with cool water
• shampooing the hair with acid-balanced shampoo
• reconditioning the hair
• toweling dry the hair
• reexamining the scalp and hair
• applying toner, if necessary
• cleaning and sanitizing implements and work area.
