• construction of numbers and large and small uppercase letters
• the use of the single-stroke Gothic alphabet, as recommended by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
• the use of aids, such as lettering triangles and other instruments.
