• species that are protected by laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Endangered Species Act
• state and local laws governing wildlife
• ways such laws impact the care and handling of wildlife (e.g., who is allowed to care for certain species and who is not)
• trends for human-wildlife interface
• the legal criteria for licensure
• the role of wildlife in the transmission of disease in domestic species, humans, and associated public health considerations. 

Process/Skill Questions:

• What additional methods does the state use to protect wildlife other than enacting laws that affect the care and handling of wildlife (e.g., nesting sites, eggs, habitat preservation)?
• What permit levels can a wildlife rehabilitator obtain through the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries? What do the different permit levels allow a rehabilitator to do?
