Demonstration should include

• using required PPE
• determining the patient has fasted before surgery
• identifying and obtaining equipment
• applying antiseptic scrub to clipped area and preparing the clipped area (with a clean surgical sponge, beginning at the incision site, moving in a circular motion, and working toward the edges and discarding the sponge once it reaches the edges of the clipped area)
• wiping the clipped area with a rinse solution (using a clean surgical sponge and following the same pattern as when scrubbing with the antiseptic)
• repeating the scrub and rinse a minimum of three times or until the final rinse sponge is clean
• positioning patient for surgery, according to instructions and ensuring secure restraint.

• Why is it important to not bring the sponge back to the incision site once it is moved away from the incision site while prepping the area for surgery?
• Why is it important to apply a generous amount of surgical scrub solution to the clipped area and to scrub the skin with gauze sponges or a surgical brush?
