Clipping should include
- using required PPE
- using clippers only in the direction of the lay of the hair, unless otherwise directed, to ensure an even cut and avoid irritation
- using cooling blade lubricant to keep blades from overheating and checking blade temperature frequently
- selecting blades to fit hair length and coat condition, including guard combs or specialty blades for sensitive areas
- removing mats with clippers if they cannot be combed out, while stabilizing the skin to prevent injury
- performing sanitary clips as necessary for hygiene and prevention of skin irritation
- guarding against injury to the animal (e.g., pulling loose skin, avoiding razor burn) and monitoring for signs of stress or overheating
- cleaning, sanitizing, and/or disinfecting clippers and blades according to manufacturer and clinic guidelines
- storing clippers and blades after use in a dry, protected location
- informing supervisor and client if animal injury occurs and documenting the event per clinic policy.
