2018/2019 Competency-Based Task/Competency List for Barbering I (Three-year Program) (8740/36 weeks, 280 hours)

Barbering students must satisfy a minimum of 840 hours of instruction in a two- or three-year coherent sequence of courses to be eligible to take the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology licensing examination. Upon successful completion of the program, students may earn the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology license. For more information, see Superintendent’s Memo 075-16 and Superintendent’s Memo 072-17.

Tasks/competencies bordered in blue are considered optional when marked as such; they and/or additional tasks/competencies may be taught at the discretion of the school division. All other tasks are considered essential statewide and are required of all students.

Performing Scalp and Hair Care

  1. Conduct client consultation regarding use of hair products.
  2. Apply towel and drape to client.
  3. Analyze client's scalp and hair for abnormal conditions.
  4. Brush hair in preparation for shampoo.

Cutting Hair

  1. Consult with client before haircut.
  2. Analyze client's hair and facial shape, prior to a haircut.

Styling Hair

  7. Demonstrate hair wrapping and sculpting techniques.

Introducing Chemical Texture Service Procedures

  1. Conduct client consultation regarding chemical service procedures.
  2. Analyze hair and scalp condition for a particular chemical texture service.
  3. Select product for chemical texture service.
  4. Select rod type for permanent waving.
  5. Select wrap method and sectioning pattern.
  6. Demonstrate sectioning and subsectioning.
  7. Demonstrate application of relaxer.

Lightening and Coloring Hair
