Write various types of business communications.

Definition

Writing in response to customer and coworker inquiries should include accurately and courteously answering questions and researching information requests in a timely manner. Writing should reflect an understanding that customer inquiries should be treated as a sales opportunity. In responding to customer or coworker inquiries, the writer should also

  • consult sources of accurate information
  • use direct, descriptive, and specific language
  • clarify inquiries
  • use correct grammar and writing mechanics
  • use an appropriate communication format (e.g., letter, memorandum, e-mail, report, press release, thank-you note)
  • ensure that the written communication is presented in a concise, neat, and well-organized way
  • respond in a culturally appropriate, professional, and timely manner.

Business writing should also reflect appropriate use of technical language, which includes

  • interpreting the meaning of specialized vocabulary (i.e., jargon)
  • analyzing the audience
  • empathizing with the audience
  • expressing technical concepts and vocabulary in layperson's language, as appropriate.

  • What is the difference between a memo and a letter?
  • What are four types of business communication? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each type of communication? Under what circumstances would each be used?
  • Why is a handwritten thank-you note important in the interview process?
  • Why is it essential to consider the audience when planning and writing a business communication?
  • Are traditional business letters still important, despite the growth of electronic communication? Why, or why not?
  • Under what circumstances should a written letter be sent, instead of an e-mail?
  • When corresponding via e-mail, how quickly should you respond? What is a reasonable time period that the sender should expect to hear back from you?

The student will apply social science skills to understand economic systems by

  1. identifying the basic economic questions encountered by all economic systems;
  2. comparing the characteristics of traditional, free market, command, and mixed economies, as described by Adam Smith and Karl Marx; and
  3. evaluating the impact of the government’s role in the economy on individual economic freedoms.

The student will apply social science skills to understand the role of government in the Virginia and United States economies by

  1. describing the provision of government goods and services that are not readily produced by the market;
  2. describing government’s establishment and maintenance of the rules and institutions in which markets operate, including the establishment and enforcement of property rights, contracts, consumer rights, labor-management relations, environmental protection, and competition in the marketplace;
  3. investigating and describing the types and purposes of taxation that are used by local, state, and federal governments to pay for services provided by the government;
  4. analyzing how Congress can use fiscal policy to stabilize the economy;
  5. describing the effects of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy on price stability, employment, and the economy; and
  6. evaluating the trade-offs in government decisions.
