V-TECS Questions and Answers

Q: What is V-TECS Direct, and how can I obtain it?

A: V-TECS Direct is a database application software that allows the user to access, modify, and generate reports using the occupational data published by V-TECS or input data on a local level. It is available to member states, and the state of Virginia has distributed it widely through a network of contact people at school divisions statewide. To find out whether your school division has V-TECS Direct, see the local Site Contact listing. If you need assistance, phone or e-mail the CTE Resource Center.

Q: What is the difference between V-TECS Direct for DOS and V-TECS Direct for Windows?

A: The new (Windows) version has a different look and feel, is easier to use, and has more flexibility in terms of data entry and reporting. There are more "Search" capabilities in the new version. The user navigates V-TECS for Windows using the mouse rather than the arrow keys, "Escape" key, and "Enter" key. There are on-line "Help" screens throughout. The new version can accommodate the Virginia SOLs.

Q: What are the similarities between the DOS and Windows versions of V-TECS Direct?

A: They handle the same occupational data files. That means that you can take the occupational data from your existing disks or hard drive and import it directly into V-TECS for Windows.

Q: I understand that the new V-TECS is on CD-ROM. Can I also obtain it on diskette?

A: Yes, but keep in mind that if you order V-TECS on CD-ROM, there will be 58 occupations included with the software. If you order V-TECS on diskette, you may request specific occupations available through the CTE Resource Center.

Q: What are the hardware requirements for V-TECS Direct for Windows?

A: The minimum configuration is:

An IBM-Compatible Computer
VGA Color Monitor
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 (The newest version, V-TECS 4+, requires Windows 95 or higher)
8 MB RAM
Hard disk drive space: 12 MB for the program itself and 5-8 MB for each occupational data set
High Density 3.5" disk drive or CD-ROM drive
Windows-supported printer

Q: What is the cost for V-TECS Direct for Windows?

A: The Virginia Department of Education is replacing all existing DOS copies free of charge. There will be a cost for any additional copies of the software. If your locality has never been trained, please call the CTE Resource Center (804-673-3778).

Q: How will I get the new software?

A: Each school division may send one representative to a regional training session. This person will be the "site contact" for your school division. The software is available only to trained sites; however, if you have missed a regional training session, you can arrange for instruction through the CTE Resource Center.

Q: How can I get all the teachers in my school division trained in the use of V-TECS Direct for Windows?

A: Your site contact (the person you choose to send to the regional training) will become your school division's trainer. (That is why the workshops are designed as "train-the-trainer" sessions.) In addition, the CTE Resource Center is available for user support, instruction, and documentation assistance.

Q: After I install the software using my V-TECS Direct CD-ROM, how do I import the occupational data?

A: You need to use the "Import" button that appears in the main menu screen. This will allow you to copy some or all of the data files onto your hard drive. It is important that you read the instructional insert included in the jewel case of the CD (or read the "help" screen, accessible to you if you press the "F1" key in the software). You need to read the instructions, because they will tell you what file names to type if you want (1) ALL OCCUPATIONS (2) ONE OR MORE CLUSTERS OF OCCUPATIONS or (3) INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONS.

Q: Do I need to have the CD-ROM in the drive when I run V-TECS Direct?

A: Absolutely not. Once you install V-TECS Direct, the program and all the data files reside on your machine's hard drive. The CD-ROM is simply a storage device for the program and data, and it also provides you with a secure, read-only backup of the original files.

Q: I have more questions that you haven't covered. To whom should I address these questions?

A: If you have questions about V-TECS Direct -- its operation, distribution, or some other matter -- send them by e-mail to Peggy Watson at the CTE Resource Center at vtecs@cteresource.org
