Carpentry III 8603

Suggested Grade Level: 12 (36 weeks, 280 hours)

Prerequisite:  Carpentry II (8602/36 weeks, 280 hours)

This course prepares students for success in the carpentry profession. Students use hand and power tools to cut stock; build and install foundations, trusses, doors, windows, stairs, and finishes; study blueprints; and frame walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, decks, and porches. In addition, students are introduced to basic rigging, learn to estimate and select building materials, and install cabinets. The cooperative education method is available for this course. Students combine classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training in an approved position with continuing supervision throughout the school year.

Note: Carpentry III may be offered as a complement to an existing concentration sequence in any CTE program area. In some instances, where noted, it may be combined with specific courses to create concentration sequences.

As noted in Superintendent’s Memo #106-10 (4-30-2010), this Career and Technical Education (CTE) course must maintain a maximum pupil-to-teacher ratio of 20 students to one teacher, due to safety regulations. The 2010-2012 biennial budget waiver of the teacher-to-pupil ratio staffing requirement does not apply.
