Career Planning Guide Overhauled
June sees the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of CTE officially unveiling the re-engineered Career Planning Guide (CPG), a career-planning tool for students and a resource for parents, teachers, and counselors who guide students in career choices. The CPG is powered by a database of possible careers and occupations related to students’ CTE and academic interests. The new implementation completes our integration of Verso, the Administrative Planning Guide, and the CPG—all are now powered by the same database and are, thus, more dependable and efficient.
Users can begin by browsing through a career cluster, a CTE interest area, or an academic area. A search box offers another means to explore. A student interested in Fashion Design, for example, has several options:
- Type Fashion Design in the search box, and the CPG presents results related to the topic.
- Go to Career Clusters and pick the most logical cluster—Arts, AV Technology, and Communication. The CPG presents the pathways within Arts, so the user might choose Visual Arts. The resulting list of occupations includes Fashion Designer, and when a user selects that occupation, the CPG displays related CTE courses.
- Go to Career and Technical Education and pick the most likely program area—Family and Consumer Sciences. Fashion Design I and II are listed there, and when a user selects one, the CPG delivers the basic course information.
- Go to Academic Emphases and select Art. The CPG lists related Career Clusters, pathways, and occupations, where the user will find Fashion Designer.
